Resources: Literature: Sadleir Library
(added 9-30-04)
A big thanks to Peter Scott in
the UK for some new Sadleir books.
The following set of books came
from Peter Scott in the UK. Several of the books have a Sadleir
signature in them. One of the books is the 1720 volume about Sir
Ralph's ambassadorial duties to Scotland and another is by Franc
Sadleir. In any case these books seem to have come from the
personal library of a Sadleir. Whom I don't know.

This is the same book as is
listed on the Books page. This
particular copy is in poor shape. Both the front and back
covers are loose.
The inside cover (see
picture to left) contains a bookplate for Lewis Montolieu.
Above the bookplate is the signature A. Tredill (I think)
and below the plate is T. Lewis. If
anyone owns a copy of this book or knows of the location
of one, I am interested in purchasing them or getting
photos of any signatures that they may contain.

The Death Of Abel:
In Five Books.

Of Mr. Gessner.
London

The bookplate on the
inside cover is that of Letitia S. G. (Sarah Georgina)
Sadleir (b. abt. 1808 - d. 27 Nov. 1867). She was
married to Ralph Sadleir (b. 5 Jan. 1815 - d. 28 Sept.
1902). Her signature appears on the illustration page
opposite the title page.
The title page has the
signatures of Abigail Sadleir and Mary Sadleir. Under
Mary's signature is also the date: Feb Th 23
1820.

I thought that the
"Th" may stand for Thursday, but the 23rd
was a Wednesday. Perhaps She thought it was the 24th
and wrote the TH first.
Unfortunately the front
cover of this book is detached.

Henry Sadlier was the 2nd Baron Dunalley. Since
a Henry Sadleir's signature appears on the title
page perhaps this is the same person.
Incidentally the Barony of Dunalley was created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1800.1
Here is a list of
the Barons Dunalley:
Henry
Prittie, 1st Baron Dunalley (1743-1801)
Henry Sadlier Prittie, 2nd Baron Dunalley (1775-1854), elected a Representative Peer in 1828
Henry Prittie, 3rd Baron Dunalley (1807-1885)
Henry O'Callaghan Prittie, 4th Baron Dunalley (1851-1927), elected a Representative Peer in 1891
Henry Cornelius O'Callaghan Prittie, 5th Baron Dunalley (1877-1948)
Henry Desmond Graham Prittie, 6th Baron Dunalley (1912-1992)
Henry Francis Cornelius Prittie, 7th Baron Dunalley (b. 1948)

There is a typed letter
pasted to the inside cover, dated June 1936, to Thomas
Ulick Sadlier from George Bingham. The letter recounts a
story about their mutual relative John Sadler. I have
made this letter available as a PDF. (Adobe
Acrobat Reader will be necessary to view it).

There was a scrapbook from
this collection that went to another dealer. I have been
unable to acquire this book. However, Mr. Scott has been
kind enough to contact the owner and photograph a few of
the pages which are shown below.
If anyone has any
information regarding the contents of these photos such
as the location of the Manors, etc.. please contact me
at tcharney AT sadleir DOT org.
